Mokmeli et al divided 125 patients into 3 groups according to their systolic blood pressure: 1. Normotensive (normal) (<120 mmHg, 50 patients), 2. Pre-hypertensive (120-139 mmHg, 50 patients), 3. Hypertensive (stage 1: 140-159 mmHg, 25 patients). All the groups were treated with an intravenous laser with a 630 nm, 2.5 mW power at the end of an intravenous fiber.
Pulse rate, systolic, diastolic, and pulse pressures were measured before, after. and 15 minutes after the therapy. There was no statistically significant difference for the pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the normotensive group. However significant difference was observed for the pulse rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the pre-hypertensive group. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure were also significantly different for the hypertensive group.
In conclusion, intravenous laser therapy is an effective method to modify factors that result in a reduction of arterial pressure. It can be combined with anti hypertensive drugs in pre-hypertensive and hypertensive patients as a modality of treatment. The method is also safe for use by normotensive patients.
